Staying Safe During a Move

A move can be an exciting, yet stressful experience. The possibilities of what’s to come, as well as making your new space feel like home make the experience worth it; however, precautions need to be taken in order to make your move as successful as possible. Whether you’re simply moving down the street or across the country, accidents can happen. There are a lot of moving parts during the process, and from boxes being handled incorrectly to sharp items poking out of these boxes, the risk for injury increases when you’re not careful. Thankfully, this can all be avoided by taking proper measures to ensure that everyone involved with your move stays safe.

Here are some of our top tips for staying safe during a move.

Pack Accordingly

Although it may seem convenient to shove as much as possible into a box while it’s on the floor, this may pose a problem when you or your movers go to lift it up off of the floor. Overpacking boxes is a recipe for disaster when moving. Not only do you risk injuring yourself or someone else, due to the weight of the box, you also risk damaging your items if the box isn’t strong enough to handle the immense weight. You may have more boxes than you’d like, but packing the appropriate amount of items into each box is the preferred method to moving day success. This is why we recommend hiring a team to aid you in this process. A team of professionals will know how to properly pack up your items and label the boxes accordingly, so that no one gets injured and your items arrive to your new home safely.

Dress Properly

You may be eager to embark on the next phase of your life, but if you’re planning on being hands-on during the moving process, you’ll need to get through moving day first. This means packing away your nice clothes and uncomfortable shoes, and donning apparel that’s easy to move in, and shoes that provide the support you need. Open toe shoes, high heels and flip flops don’t provide you with the necessary support and protection you need during moving day. Ditch these items and stay comfortable. If you’re moving in the summer months, be sure to wear lightweight clothing that’s breathable, so that you don’t get dehydrated.

Take Breaks

Everyone involved in your move should take breaks throughout the day to avoid fatigue. Be sure that any family members, friends or members of your moving team are well hydrated throughout the day, and be sure to take breaks to eat, so that no one gets dizzy or light-headed during the day. This is especially important when it’s warm outside, so keep the temperature in mind when you’re planning out your move.

Other Helpful Moving Safety Tips

You’ll want to keep the following in mind in order to stay safe during your move:

·         Don’t overexert yourself, use a dolly when needed

·         Stay organized and maintain a clear path in the home for items to be loaded/unloaded

·         Hire the appropriate help

We always recommend hiring a team that will help you from start to finish, no matter how big or small the move may be. You want to be sure that you’re able to enjoy the process, and staying safe and stress-free during your move will allow you to focus on what the future holds in your new space.
